Living to a Ripe Old Age on Orcas
What would island life be like without our seniors? Orcas has an active, vital senior population, and in recent years, there have been significant gains in developing senior services here.
Lahari on Orcas
Many Orcas Island residents know of Lahari as the beautiful hospice facility located in Deer Harbor. That facility closed a few years ago when it became clear that residents who were in need of hospice care preferred to obtain it in their own home surroundings.
Lahari now provides a wide range of services for aged and frail members of the community including education, resources and support up to and including hospice care.
Services through Lahari include:
- Support for in-home volunteer hospice care
- Training opportunities for caregivers
- Improving the safety and livability of the homes of senior and disabled residents through the Orcas Safe Homes Project.

Senior Services of San Juan County
Senior Services of San Juan County assists seniors in remaining independent and in their own homes for as long as possible. This nonprofit operates a senior center on Orcas Island which serves as a resource and information center for all programs affecting those over age 60.
